In the mid 1980s Carl Plansky began making paint for himself and his friends. He had
always been interested in pigments, oils, mediums, and old-world recipes, and enjoyed experimenting with traditional materials. Wherever he traveled Carl would research the history of painting and the relationship between painters and paintmakers. In France he bought colors from the houses that had made paints for Monet, Matisse, and Cezanne. He analyzed their paint to see how fine or coarse the grind was and to determine where they found their pigments and oils. With this same passion, he now searches for the most beautiful raw materials in the world, importing pigments from dozens of countries.

We now offer over a hundred colors of specially selected Williamsburg Oil Colors. Most are available in tubes of 40ml. & 150ml. and jars of 8oz., 16oz. and 32oz. sizes. All Williamsburg Oil Colors are considered to have excellent lightfastness, except Alizarin Crimson, which has poor lightfastness, and Van Dyke Brown, which has very poor lightfastness.
